The 11+ plus test, for some 10 and 11 year old students in the United Kingdom are brutally competitive tests administered to precocious minds in their final year of primary education, and determines their admission to English grammar schools and other secondary schools which use academic selection.
Depending on the area you live in, the Eleven Plus exam for state grammar schools will, consist of papers in any of 4 different subjects: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
This examination taken by some school pupils in their final year of primary school for admission to their desired grammar school or private independent school. However, most children are 10 years old when they take the 11+plus exam – as “11 Plus” denotes that the exam entry age for students is age 11 or over.
There are now about 160 Grammar Schools remaining in England after the eleven plus test was discontinued in Northern Ireland.
The success ratio for the 11 plus test varies considerably about the nation, with some schools attracting thousands of applicants for as little as 175 seats with a selection rate of perhaps 3 percent. Elsewhere In areas where the grammar system has been fully retained the success ratios are somewhat higher.
